IATA blocks 2-letter designator code for bankrupt Go First
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has blocked the two-letter designator code “G8” for Go First, a bankrupt Indian airline that has not been flying for the past few months. IATA assigns two-letter designator codes to airlines for use in reservations, schedules, timetables, telecommunications, ticketing, cargo documentation, legal, tariffs, and other commercial/traffic purposes.
One of the requirements for an airline to be eligible for an IATA two-letter designator is that it must be operating. Since Go First ceased to operate commercial flights in early May 2023, it is no longer eligible for the code.
The two-letter designator and numeric codes will remain blocked for 12 months, during which Go First can ask for the reinstatement of the designator if it meets the requirements.
The two-letter designator “9W” for Jet Airways, which was grounded in April 2019, also remains blocked. IATA codes are key for the identification of an airline, its destinations, and traffic documents.
Go First filed for bankruptcy in May 2023 citing the grounding of about half its 54 Airbus A320neo planes to faulty Pratt & Whitney engines. Ever since the Wadia-owned airline has suspended all its operations.
Go First owes financial creditors Rs 6,521 crore. The filing lists Central Bank of India Ltd, Bank of Baroda Ltd, IDBI Bank Ltd, Axis Bank Ltd, and Deutsche Bank among its financial creditors. The airline also owes Rs 2,660 crore to lessors. In its filing with NCLT, the airline says that as on date it has a total of 54 Air Crafts, which are its main assets. Out of these, 28 are grounded due to the non-supply of engines by P&W, and the remaining 26 are operational.
Resolution professional Shailendra Ajmera has invited EoI from prospective buyers for Go First. The last date for submission of EoI is 8 September 2023. The likely date for issue of the list of prospective resolution applicant is 18 September.
